The Silver Wire Solder Kit offers a practical sampling of three flowing silver wire solders — Easy, Medium, and Hard — in a single package. Each length of wire weighs approximately 1.66 pennyweights, for a combined total of approximately 5 dwt (1/4 troy ounce). This kit is well suited for jewelers who want to keep all three flow grades on hand for a range of fabrication and repair applications.
The terms Extra Easy, Easy, Medium, and Hard describe the relative temperature flow points between solders of one type or brand. Extra Easy has the lowest flow point, followed by Easy, then Medium, then Hard. This labeling system generally holds true across silver solder brands, though differences between manufacturers do exist — one maker's Medium may flow at the same temperature as another maker's Hard.
Generally, the higher the flow point temperature, the higher the silver content of the solder. Higher silver content improves color match to silver and theoretically produces a stronger bond.
Which grade should you use? When manufacturing, start with the highest-temperature (Hard) solder so that subsequent repairs can be made with lower-temperature grades. When doing repairs, use the lowest-temperature (Extra Easy or Easy) solder available, since the solder previously used is unknown.
