Open top refers to the top jump ring on these spring rings which is not soldered closed making it easier to attach to chains.  These are by far the most popular way to buy spring rings.  If you wish to close the open top use a laser welder or spot welder to do so. Never use a torch to solder the top ring closed as the heat will destroy the tension of the internal spring in the spring ring.
