From talismans believed to protect against fire and dragons in ancient China to symbols of modesty and purity in Europe, pearls have been treasured for centuries. Cultured pearls form when a bead or small piece of mantle tissue is intentionally introduced into a mollusk, which then deposits concentric layers of nacre. Many pearls display a soft, iridescent glow known as orient.
Cultured Freshwater Pearls are grown in lakes and ponds and are known for their wide range of shapes, sizes, and natural colors. Today, China and the United States are leading sources for freshwater pearl cultivation.
