Black Onyx, also known as black agate, is dyed black chalcedony. Chalcedony is composed of tiny quartz crystals not visible to the naked eye. Natural black chalcedony is exceptionally rare — virtually all black chalcedony on the market is grey chalcedony that has been chemically treated to achieve its rich, uniform black color. Black Onyx is the top-selling chalcedony in the jewelry market and has a long history of use, including its prominence in Art Deco jewelry design.
These genuine Black Onyx cabochons feature an octagon flat top double bevel cut, making them well suited for rings, pendants, brooches, and other fine jewelry settings. Clean with warm, soapy water. Use of an ultrasonic or steam cleaner is generally safe.
