Black Onyx, also known as black agate, is dyed black chalcedony. Chalcedony is composed of tiny quartz crystals that are not visible to the naked eye. Natural black chalcedony is exceptionally rare — virtually all black chalcedony on the market is grey chalcedony that has been chemically treated to achieve its characteristic shiny black color. Black Onyx is the top-selling chalcedony in the jewelry market and was a hallmark gemstone of Art Deco design. These oval flat top double bevel cabochons feature uniform opaque black color, making them an ideal choice for setting in rings, pendants, bracelets, and other fine jewelry applications.
Care is straightforward: clean with warm, soapy water. Use of an ultrasonic or steam cleaner is generally considered safe for these stones.
