A flex shaft kit hangs a motor above the bench and carries drilling, grinding, polishing and finishing power to your hand through a flexible drive shaft. The Ottoflex S Model 2 is a value driven system for jewelers and craftspeople who want dependable control without the price of a premium setup. A sealed bearing motor rated at 1/8 HP turns up to 20,000 RPM with smooth low speed modulation, and the kit arrives complete with a No. 30 style adjustable Jacobs chuck handpiece and key, a variable speed foot control, and the 88 piece AK21 assortment of burs, brushes and polishing bits, ready to work straight out of the box. It runs on 110V / 60Hz and draws 2.6 amps through a North American 3-prong plug.

Good Flex Shaft

I got this because I heard it is a good alternative to the foredom. No complaints so far; runs quiet, good power. The sheath on the flex shaft seems very durable and the foot pedal is nearly exactly the same as the foredom one. The hand piece is fine unless you want a really thin gripping area.

The handpiece

I am reviewing the handpiece separately from the motor and shaft because the handpiece has a serious, dangerous flaw. Foredom’ s hand-piece, on which this is based, has an outside aluminum sheath which covers the rotor teeth. The teeth are not covered by the sheath on this handpiece. The top of my finger slipped into the teeth while the hand piece was in use. The skin was pinched between the teeth and was getting pulled down into the device. It was painful and horrible. I suggest you buy the foredom original hand piece.

Powerful, with some flaws

I couldn’t spend much on a rotary tool. I got this one and there are many things to recommend it. It is powerful, runs smoothly, and is very quiet, especially compared to my dremel.
On the down side, I didn’t notice that it doesn’t have a reverse. Or, an on off switch. I have to unplug it when I’m not using it, if I don’t, I could accidentally step on the foot control, causing the motor and handpiece to jump and run without me! Yikes.

Does it reverse?

No the Ottoflex S does not reverse. If you want a flex shaft motor that goes forward and reverse consider the Foredom SR motor or the Eurotool flex shaft motor, which is a Chinese copy of the Foredom SR motor.
