The Fretz HMR-103 Narrow Raising Hammer is the largest hammer in the Fretz lineup, comparable in scale to full-size silversmith's hammers from Peddinghaus. Built for serious raising work, this hammer features hardened stainless steel heads polished to an exceptional surface finish, paired with rosewood handles finished to a remarkably refined feel. The balance and weight distribution make it well-suited for extended forming sessions on larger-scale work.
According to designer Bill Fretz, raising is the compression of metal down to the stake without stretching it. The key technique is to angle the metal off the stake, creating an air gap that allows for compression rather than stretch. The Narrow Raising Hammer can be used to raise sheet metal into a bowl against a wooden stake or metal t-stake, to raise cylinders forming a concave shape, and to planish subtle concave shapes. As a general rule, smaller and lighter projects call for mini hammers, while larger work demands a hammer of this scale.
