The Fretz HMR-109 Rounded Wide Raising Hammer is a large, purpose-built raising hammer designed for vessel raising and forming hollow forms in metal. With a head weight of 4.2 oz. (119g) and a hardened stainless steel head polished to perfection, this hammer delivers precise compression and control for serious metalsmithing work. The rosewood handle is finished to an exceptional standard—comfortable in hand with a balance that supports extended use at the bench.
As Bill Fretz explains: Raising is the compression of metal down to the stake without stretching it. The technique requires angling the metal off the stake to create an air gap for compression. The Wide Raising Hammer can be used to raise sheet metal into a bowl against a wooden stake or a metal t-stake, and is also well suited for raising in cylinders to form concave shapes. It can additionally be used to planish subtle concave forms. The appropriate hammer size is dictated by the scale of the work—larger pieces demand the large hammers in the Fretz line.
