The Fretz HMR-14 Raw Silk Texturing Hammer is a precision planishing hammer designed to impart a distinctive "raw silk" surface texture to metal. The texture is created by hand using diamond tools, and only one face receives this treatment — producing a finish similar to rolled texture on flat metal, yet equally effective on dimensional and formed shapes. This is a true jeweler's hammer in the Fretz tradition: beautifully balanced, expertly finished, and built to perform at the bench for years.
The hammer head is cast from 420 stainless steel and hardened to 50Rc, then highly polished for consistent, controlled strikes. The handle is turned from African Padauk (a type of rosewood), offering a smooth, sensory grip that feels exceptionally well-balanced in hand. Handle color may range from dark brown to lighter tones, as Fretz occasionally sources recycled Asian Padauk — variation in shade does not affect performance or quality.
Within the Fretz hammer family, the Jeweler's Hammer series sits between the smaller Precisionsmith hammers and the larger Silversmithing hammers, making them a versatile choice for a wide range of metalsmithing tasks.
