The Fretz HMR-20M is a medium-model classic chasing hammer designed in the tradition of the German and French chasing hammers that have been trusted by jewelers and metalsmiths for generations. This hammer features a highly polished cast stainless steel head with a slightly domed 1-1/4" (31mm) diameter hammer face and a ball peen end — a timeless profile suited to chasing and repoussé work.
The head is cast from 420 stainless steel and hardened to 50C on the Rockwell scale. Unlike other hammers in the Fretz line, the classic chasing hammers are designed to strike chasing tools — not to contact metal directly. As a result, some marring of the polished head face is expected during normal use and does not affect performance. Properly hardened chasing tools will show mushrooming on their striking end over time, which is a sign of correct use.
The handle is crafted from Padauk, a richly grained wood in the rosewood family, providing both comfort and a refined aesthetic. Because all Fretz hammers are hand finished, minor variations in head diameter may occur between individual hammers.
Eye protection is required when using any hammer.
