The Fretz HMR-402 PrecisionSmith Wide Raising Hammer is part of the Fretz PrecisionSmith line — a series of super-small stainless steel hammers engineered for precise, detailed work on fine jewelry. Smaller than the Fretz Mini hammer line, PrecisionSmith hammers feature shorter head lengths (65mm vs. 70mm on average), reduced working surfaces, and thinner handles, making them ideal for controlled, exacting metalwork.
Like all Fretz hammers, the HMR-402 features a highly polished, properly hardened stainless steel head paired with a rosewood handle finished to a standard that is immediately noticeable in hand. The balance is precisely tuned, and the handle finish is exceptionally smooth — a hallmark of the PrecisionSmith series.
About Raising: Raising is the compression of metal down to the stake without stretching it. The technique requires angling the metal off the stake to create an air gap for compression. The Wide Raising Hammer can be used to raise sheet metal into a bowl shape against a wooden stake or metal t-stake. It is also effective for raising in cylinders to form concave shapes and can be used to planish subtle concave forms.
