The Fretz HMR-8 Rounded Narrow Raising/Embossing Hammer delivers the precision, balance, and surface quality that professional metalsmiths and jewelers demand. Part of the original Fretz Jewelers Hammer line — the most popular in the growing Fretz family — the HMR-8 sits squarely between the smaller Precisionsmith and larger Silversmithing series, making it the go-to choice for a wide range of forming techniques.
The HMR-8 head is cast in 420 stainless steel and hardened to 50Rc, then polished to a flawless mirror finish. Its rounded narrow profile is purpose-built for embossing narrow pod or oblong shapes, delivering smoother overlapping marks on long, thin forms than a round embossing hammer can achieve. It is equally effective for raising — compressing metal down to the stake by angling the workpiece to create the necessary air gap — and for freeform embossing, which stretches metal from the inside using a sandbag or cavity.
The handle is turned from African Padauk, a Rosewood-type wood, and finished to a remarkably smooth, sensual feel. Each handle is sized proportionally to its head weight for optimal balance. Handle color may range from dark brown to a lighter shade, as Fretz occasionally sources recycled Asian Padauk — variation in tone does not affect performance or quality.
