Fretz Michael Good Hammer Set of 3

Part # 137.188KIT In Stock Weight -- lb -- g
Current price $257.00

Designed by Michael Good with Bill and Jordan Fretz, this three-hammer set is purpose-built for anticlastic raising—a forming method where the sheet's center compresses while the edges stretch, producing two opposing curves. Each hammer is made to Good's specifications by the Fretz hammer & stake factory in Vietnam and features a polished stainless steel head for a crisp, mark-free strike on properly prepared metal.

Features

  • Polished stainless steel heads tuned for anticlastic raising and planishing
  • Includes Good's sight-line P-1 planisher plus two long-reach cross-pein planishers (CP-1, CP-2)
  • Made by Fretz to Michael Good's specifications in Vietnam
  • Optimized for thin sheet; delivers predictable, repeatable strikes
  • Cut-away ends on the P-1 improve sightline through the hammer for working around bracelets and sculptural forms

What's Included

Part # Model Type Head Length Handle Length Notes
137.187 P-1 Planishing 120 mm Cut-away ends improve sightline through the hammer; large face diameters make it easy to work around bracelets and sculptural forms.
137.188 CP-1 Cross Pein Planishing 148 mm 250 mm (10") Long, slightly curved head for a smooth arcing stroke; narrow face for thin concave curves; thicker end adds useful heft.
137.188-2 CP-2 Cross Pein Planishing 145 mm 250 mm (10") Similar to CP-1 but with thinner, narrower faces for finer concave work; retains mass for heavier stock when needed.

Notes

Anticlastic work is typically performed on thin non-ferrous sheet using a sinusoidal stake. For thin stock, pairing these steel hammers with a nylon or plastic sinusoidal stake offers greater control and a cleaner surface; steel stakes allow faster forming but generally require additional planishing. Select a hammer whose arc is slightly tighter than the stake's corresponding curve, strike at right angles to the stake, and overlap blows evenly—rotating the work as needed to maintain smooth furrows and uniform curvature. Anneal between courses as required by the alloy, and continue raising systematically toward the center until the desired axial and generator curves are achieved.
