This natural Euro charcoal block is imported from Europe and made from solid, knot-free hardwood that has been specially treated for prolonged use. Measuring 3-1/4" long by 2-1/4" wide by 1-1/4" thick (80mm × 60mm × 30mm), this soft charcoal block is an essential soldering surface for jewelers and metalsmiths. Charcoal blocks create a reducing atmosphere during soldering, reflecting heat back onto the workpiece to make the flame more effective and efficient. The soft composition readily accepts pins to hold items securely in place while you work.

Important: Charcoal blocks must be wrapped with binding wire and heat cured before use. Charcoal naturally absorbs moisture from the air. A block stored in a high-humidity environment can crack when heat is applied as trapped moisture tries to escape. Before first use—and any time the block has been exposed to humidity—follow these steps to remove moisture:

1. Gently heat a burner on your stove and warm a cast iron pan or similar heavy pan.
2. Place the charcoal block in the pan.
3. Observe the block for escaping steam until steaming stops.
4. The block is now moisture-free and ready to use.

Store charcoal blocks in a cool, dry place. Note that charcoal blocks will naturally shrink with use. Search online for videos demonstrating the many methods for preparing and curing charcoal blocks before use.
