Boulder Opal forms exclusively in Queensland, Australia, where precious opal develops as veins and patches within rugged brown ironstone boulders. Over millions of years, rainwater dissolved silica from the earth's surface and deposited it into natural cavities within the ironstone host rock. The result is a gem of exceptional durability — the ironstone backing provides natural reinforcement that makes Boulder Opal more resistant to cracks and fractures than other opal varieties.
This 25mm x 18mm oval Boulder Opal is graded Some Opalescence, meaning it contains at least a flash of opalescence across the stone's surface. Opalescence covers approximately 1–5% of the gemstone's surface, with primary hues of purples and greens. Each stone's pattern is entirely unique, heightened by the play of opalescence within the ironstone matrix. Rough material for this stone originated near the city of Cunnamulla, Queensland.
Sold by the piece. Care note: Clean with warm, soapy water only. Avoid ultrasonic cleaners, steam cleaners, and any sudden or rapid heat changes.
