Description

Gold test needles are an essential tool for jewelers performing acid-based karat testing. This set of three needles covers the most commonly encountered gold karats in jewelry: 10K, 14K, and 18K. Use these needles as reference standards when comparing acid reactions on a test stone to determine the karat of an unknown gold item.

To use, select the appropriate karat needle and rub or scratch it against a test stone. Make a second rubbing or scratch with the item to be tested directly alongside the needle mark. Apply a drop of testing acid across both marks and observe how each reacts. If both marks react identically, the item being tested likely matches the karat of the needle used. If the test item dissolves faster, it may be a lower karat; if it dissolves more slowly, it may be a higher karat.

Note: Acid-based gold testing is subjective by nature and requires careful observation and consistent practice to produce reliable results.
