Oval Millgrain tools are used by stone setters to dress and decorate stone settings. The effect of the small, uniform depressions made by a millgrain wheel helps make the stone appear larger and brighter. While round millgrain tools are also available, oval millgrain tools have consistently been the more popular choice among professional stone setters.
These tools should not be confused with the larger decorative tools commonly used on a lathe for creating the decorative edge of a wedding band. Stone setting millgrain tools are extremely small and purpose-built for detailed setting work. The difference between size #1, which measures approximately 0.35 mm across, and the largest size #15, which measures approximately 0.65 mm, is only 0.30 mm—making the incremental difference between sizes approximately 0.02 mm. Sizes are marked directly on each tool for easy identification.
