Lapis Lazuli has been mined in the mountains of Afghanistan for more than 6,000 years — these mountains are among the world's oldest known commercial gemstone mines. Prized throughout history for its vivid blue color, Lapis Lazuli was once valued as highly as sapphire and was ground to produce blue pigment before synthetic dyes existed. Lapis Lazuli is technically a rock, composed of several minerals: lazurite, pyrite, and calcite in varying proportions. Lazurite produces the characteristic blue color, calcite creates white veining, and pyrite appears as gold flecks. The highest quality Lapis Lazuli is a pure, vivid royal blue with minimal calcite or pyrite.
Denim Lapis is named for its resemblance to denim fabric, displaying a light to medium blue color with more prominent white calcite streaking than standard Lapis Lazuli. These round cabochons are untreated and make an excellent alternative for December birthstone jewelry.
