Iolite is derived from the Greek word for violet, displaying a vivid violet-blue color. These round genuine iolite cabochons are strongly pleochroic — meaning different colors appear at different viewing angles. Depending on the direction viewed, the stone can display violet, gray, or yellow hues. This remarkable optical property was historically used by the Vikings to locate the sun on overcast days for navigation. Untreated and eye-clean, these cabochons are well-suited for setting in finished jewelry. Clean with warm soapy water only. Avoid use of ultrasonic and steam cleaners.
