Round Millgrain tools are used by stone setters to decorate stone settings. The effect of the small, uniform depressions made by a millgrain wheel helps make the stone appear larger and brighter. This set includes six tools in even sizes – 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, and 14 – each fitted with a wood handle.
Not to be confused with the larger decorative tools commonly used on a lathe for creating the decorative edge of a wedding band, these stone-setting millgrain tools are extremely small and are not suited for that purpose. The size range across the full millgrain line spans from size #1 (approximately 0.35 mm across) to size #15 (approximately 0.65 mm across) – a total difference of only 0.30 mm, making the increment between sizes approximately 0.02 mm. Sizes are noted as approximate due to the difficulty of measuring at this scale.
Millgrain tools are marked with a size number from 1 through 15 for easy identification. Round millgrain tools are also available individually and in sets. An oval shape, considered more popular for certain applications, is available separately.
