Boulder Opal is found exclusively in Queensland, Australia, where veins and patches of precious opal form within rugged brown ironstone boulders. These gems developed over millions of years as rainwater dissolved silica from the earth's surface and deposited it into natural cavities within the ironstone. The ironstone backing provides natural reinforcement, making Boulder Opal more resistant to cracks and fractures compared to other opal varieties.
This Higher Opalescence grade has been hand-selected from the lot to contain the most opalescence available. The opalescence may appear in patterns or be distributed throughout the gemstone's surface, covering approximately 5–10% of the surface area with primary hues of purple and green.
Rough for these stones originated near the city of Cunnamulla, Queensland. Clean with warm, soapy water. Avoid ultrasonic cleaners, steam cleaners, and any sudden or rapid heat changes.
