Gold Testing Reaction Guide

• Acid dissolves the metal quickly — metal is likely below the karat indicated on the bottle; try a lower-karat acid
• Acid dissolves the metal slowly — metal may be slightly below the karat of the acid
• Metal remains on the stone — metal is most likely the karat of the acid in the bottle

Silver Testing Reaction Guide

• 0.999 fine silver turns bright red
• 0.925 sterling silver turns dark red
• 0.800 silver turns brown

Platinum Testing Note

Platinum should remain on the stone and not dissolve under platinum acid. Some 800-type platinum alloys may dissolve slightly.
