Fretz MA Large Mushroom Anvils

The Fretz MA-Series Large Mushroom Anvils are round mushroom stakes approximately 70mm (2¾") in diameter, crafted from 420 hardened stainless steel. Each stake in the four-piece series features a tapered tang designed to fit the Fretz H-101 Bench Holder (112.720) or the Fretz VH-101 Vise Holder (112.721). These are rugged, professional-grade forming tools built to handle everything from light finishing work to heavy forging with substantial hammers.

The MA-Series is engineered for forming and forging non-ferrous metals and jewelry. Each stake offers a distinct surface profile, making them highly versatile across a wide range of metalsmithing and hollowware applications. Whether you are shaping large pendants, raising forms, forging heavy wire stock, or adding dimensional curves to sheet metal, there is an MA stake suited to the task.

MA-1 – Flat: The flat-top version of the MA-Series functions as a flat jewelry anvil or as a stake for forming the bottom of hollowware. It is an excellent first stake for forging heavy stock metal wire or ingots.

MA-2 – Low Dome: The low domed surface is ideal for forming large pendants and adding subtle dimensional stability to smaller projects. Slightly domed shapes are less prone to bending in use than flat surfaces.

MA-3 – Medium Dome: A more pronounced dome than the MA-2, this stake is used when greater curvature is needed. It can also be used as a mallet: lay sheet metal on a sandbag, strike it with the domed surface while holding the tang, and the metal will become cupped in just a few blows. Metal can then be forged or textured with various hammers using the holder.

MA-4 – High Dome (Half Round): The half-round domed profile produces dramatic curves on large surfaces. Small round or free-form shapes can be raised on the surface using a nylon or steel raising hammer — a technique more efficient than angle raising.
