A machinist square is the metalworker's equivalent of a woodworker's try square. The term square refers to the tool's primary use: measuring the accuracy of a right angle (90 degrees). To try a surface is to check its straightness or its correspondence to an adjoining surface—a fundamental task in precision metalworking, benchwork, and fabrication.
This 3" machinist square measures 95 mm x 75 mm and features a small notch cut into the inside corner. This notch prevents fine particles and debris from accumulating at the corner junction, which could otherwise lift the square off the workpiece and compromise the accuracy of the reading.
