Steel media is the go-to choice for burnishing, deburring, and heavy-duty polishing of metal parts and jewelry. Available in a variety of shapes and sizes, each type creates a unique motion in the finishing machine—whether vibratory, rotary, or high-speed disc—affecting surface smoothness, edge retention, and overall finish quality.
Below is an overview of the most common steel media shapes used in jewelry and metal finishing, their applications, and how to select the right one for your process.

Eclipse Balls are slightly flattened at the poles—a design that reduces cost while maintaining excellent finishing performance. Perfect roundness isn’t required for most applications, and these small flat spots have no impact on finish quality.
Abco Balls are precision-made with no flats, used for critical finishing work that demands maximum consistency and smoothness.
Available sizes: 3/32" – 3/16"

Cones feature a center flange and tapered crown that provide multiple contact angles on curved surfaces. They’re especially useful for ornamental designs and pieces with complex contours.
Typical sizes: 3/16", 5/16", 1/2"
Pins taper to pointed ends, allowing them to reach into recesses, grooves, through-holes, and threaded areas. They’re ideal for deflashing or cleaning fine details in cast or fabricated jewelry.
Available styles include Slim (S)
and Taper (T)
profiles for different penetration depths and aggressiveness.

The oval ball shape adds a unique oscillating motion to the finishing process. It increases surface-to-surface contact compared to standard balls, improving polishing uniformity and efficiency.
As the name suggests, Ballcones combine the best of both worlds—the burnishing action of balls and the cutting edge of cones. This scientifically proportioned shape delivers fast, consistent results and is a shop favorite for general-purpose burnishing.
Diagonals feature beveled ends that create efficient action in corners while the cylindrical body maintains broad surface contact. They’re ideal for flat or angular parts where a uniform edge finish is key.
ABcut™ is a patented design featuring an abrasive surface texture that “bites” into the metal, offering fast, heavy deburring, burnishing, and material removal. It’s ideal for robust industrial applications or first-stage finishing before polishing.
Available in three standard sizes: 1/8" × 1/2", 5/32" × 7/8", 7/32" × 7/8"
For applications requiring complete freedom from rust or contamination—especially in jewelry or food-grade metals—opt for 300 Series stainless steel media. It offers the same geometry options as carbon steel with added corrosion resistance.
Many finishers use a multi-step approach: start with ABcut or cones for initial cutting, follow with balls or ballcones for burnishing, and finish with walnut shell media for mirror polishing
